A negative pap smear history will warrent a colposcopy to determine if human papilloma virus is present. In 1943, Dr. Papanicolaou published the results of his experiments that turned a turning point in cytology and were instrumental in treating a variety of female diseases. Until now, Papanicolaou test has been considered one of the most reliable ones in detecting cervical cancer. Dr. Papanicolaou devoted his life to developing effective means of treating female reproductive health problems and focused much on examining vaginal discharge as a way of identifying uterine cancer.
