Pap Smear Results
Positive pap smear results may mean cervical dysplasia and other precancerous disorders; cone biopsy is often performed to get rid of dysplastic cells.
HPV DNA testing increase the likelihood of detecting high-risk type HPV infections associated with cervical cancer for early intervention and treatment. Changes in cervical cells in most cases can be treated without invasive measures. Dysplasia is a pre-cancer condition where cervical cells appear abnormal under a microscope.

Since a standard cytology is only a screening tool, a physician may require the patient to repeat testing in the case of mild dysplasia. When a sample contains cervical cells that appear unusually developed (dysplastic) under a microscope, clinicians use the term dysplasia to describe this finding.
