Exam Pap
An exam pap smear detects abnormal cells on the cervix, but to perform cryosurgery or other operation the cervical area should be checked with additional pap smear and colposcopy.
This screening process aids in discovering potentially pre-cancerous changes when it can be easily treated and eliminated. Since it is not a diagnostic tool, further evaluation is needed when atypical cells are present. A normal cytology is a screening tool for women who have pre-cancerous cervical changes without any symptoms.

The characteristics of these cells determine the classification of their findings. The process consists of swabbing cells from the outer cervical mucous membranes and setting them in solution to be viewed under a microscope for presence or absence of unusual cells.
