ASCUS HPV can progress to cervical cancer and be treated by cone biopsy in some cases. Human papilloma virus is believed to have a major role in cervical dysplasia. Pap smears in which both these results are present are more likely to progress to a more severe grade of dysplasia. Most scientific investigators now believe that human papilloma virus causes dysplasia and cervical cancer. ASCUS HPV can progress to cervical cancer and be treated by cone biopsy in some cases.
